On Sunday, May 25, the Official Residence was the setting for a significant commemoration of the Anniversary of the May Revolution, which brought together approximately 120 guests. The celebration of National Day provides an excellent opportunity not only to honor this historic date but also to strengthen the ties between Argentina and Jamaica and to celebrate those who help enrich this relationship.
Representing the Government of Jamaica was the Minister of State for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Alando Terrelonge, MP. Also present were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Ambassador Sheila Sealy Monteith, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Christina Edwards, among other distinguished officials.
The event featured participation from members of the diplomatic corps accredited in the city, as well as representatives from international organizations, civil society, business leaders, and organizations such as AgriBusiness and JamPRO. The collaboration of the private sector was notable, with the presence of Harbour Wines, the main importer of Argentine wines, and Derrimon, distributor of ARCOR. Additionally, Caribbean Producers Jamaica Limited (CPJ) took the opportunity to promote the local distribution of Chandon sparkling wine, which has been available in Jamaica since late 2024.
During his speech, Ambassador Balbi Calvo highlighted the long and friendly diplomatic relationship between Argentina and Jamaica, recalling that Argentina was the first country in Latin America to establish its Embassy in Kingston. He emphasized Argentina's interest in strengthening political and commercial ties, particularly in technical cooperation in agriculture, especially in the dairy project, as well as in education and tourism, mentioning the new COPA flights and the recent visit of Lionel Messi. The ambassador also underscored the potential to expand trade between the two countries.
For his part, Minister Terrelonge addressed issues of cooperation and highlighted the affection that Jamaicans feel for Argentina, evidenced during Lionel Messi's match at the National Stadium and the visit of the reggae band NONPALIDECE to the tribute for the 80th anniversary of Bob Marley's birth. The Minister emphasized the launch of the "Training for Trainers" program, which promises to develop football coaches in Jamaica and the region, generating great expectations among participants. His speech had a positive and friendly tone, reflecting the shared history and the hope for an even more promising future.
Attendees enjoyed a selection of national culinary specialties and Argentine wines, making this commemoration a memorable event.
