The Argentine Embassy in Jamaica is also the Permanent Representative to the International Seabed Authority (ISA), where this year we participated in the deliberations of the Council and the Assembly, and co-organized an event on the links between the ISA and the BBNJ Agreement.
The ISA is an autonomous international organization established under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 1994 Agreement. Headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica, it was created on November 16, 1994, and is the organization through which the States Parties to UNCLOS organize and control all activities related to mineral resources in the Area for the benefit of humanity as a whole. Thus, the ISA is mandated to ensure the effective protection of the marine environment against harmful effects that may arise from activities related to the deep seabed.
On the 30th anniversary of the creation of the ISA, we reaffirm Argentina's commitment to the principles of UNCLOS and to continuing to advance negotiations on regulations for the exploitation of deep-sea mineral resources.
